NALP Survey Results on First Year Lawyer Compensation.
As reported by Debra Cassens Weiss in a September 20, 2012 post in the on-line version of the American Bar Association Journal, NALP (the Association for Legal Career Professionals) has published survey results of 570 U.S. law firms about the average compensation for first year attorneys for 2012. Here is what it shows: for firms with over 700 lawyers, only 46% of first years received $160,000 paychecks, a decline from 54% in 2011, 58% in 2010, and 65% in 2009. The median salary for first years in 700-plus lawyer firms is $145,000, matching the 2007 median. For firms with 2-25 lawyers, the median first year compensation was $70,750. Overall, the median salary at firms of all sizes was $125,000 this year, up from $115,00 last year.
