City Spent $55.3 Million to Fight Lawsuits During 2003-2010 Time Frame.
According to a December 30, 2010 post entitled “Police Officers Are City’s Top Legal Foe” by Kelly Thornton, the San Diego Police Officers Association sued San Diego 3 times in recent years, with the City spending $8.6 million to fight the police officers in the cases. City has now brought a malpractice action against attorneys formerly representing the Officers Association, alleging that the city is entitled among other things to recoup $2.8 million incurred in legal costs in the three cases.
The Watchdog Institute, a San Diego State University nonprofit investigative reporting center, said the police lawsuits are among 23 filed against San Diego on which the City spent in excess of $1 million per case. All of the cases brought against San Diego during the 2003-2010 time frame cost the City, collectively, about $55.3 million, according to the post.
