September 1 Hearing Will Consider Fairness of Settlement and Fee Requests.
In a February 24, 2010 “In the News” post, we reported on a pending $1.25 billion settlement involving allegations of discrimination against black farmers by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
We can now report that U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman (of the District of Columbia) has given preliminary approval of this settlement on Friday, May 13, 2011.
Next up is a September 1, 2011 hearing to consider two things: the fairness of the settlement and the fee requests of plaintiffs’ attorneys. They are requesting fee awards of between 4.1-7.4% of the $1.25 billion settlement fund or, if translated into dollars, an award somewhere within the range of $51-92.5 million.
