As reported on September 5, 2012 by the Associated Press on ESPN, Penn State has spent almost $16.8 million for legal fees, consultants, and public relations firms hired to help deal with the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. (This amount was through June 30, 2012.) This amount broke down this way: nearly $10 million went to seven firms for internal investigation/crisis communications and nearly $4 million went for university legal services/defensive efforts. The school reported that the legal defense and public relations costs were covered by insurance policies or interest payments on loans it makes, not student tuition, taxpayer funds, or donations.
