Top 350 Firms’ 2012 Growth Down From 1.7% Growth in 2011.
As reported by Debra Cassens Weiss in her June 11, 2013 post in The ABA Journal, the National Law Journal reports that the top 250 U.S. law firms grew on the whole 1.1% in 2012, down from 1.7% growth in 2011.
According to her post, the top five firms, in terms of head count, were:
1) DLA Piper (added 290 lawyers, for a total of 4,036)
2) Baker & McKenzie (added 199 lawyers, for a total of 4,004)
3) Bryan Cave (added 106 lawyers, for a total of 990)
4) Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy (added 98 lawyers, for a total of 404)
5) McKenna Long & Aldridge (added 85 lawyers, for a total of 509)
The law firms that lost the most lawyers, in terms of head count, were:
1) Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (down 97 lawyers, for a total of 1,735)
2) Winston & Strawn (down 86 lawyers, for a total of 842)
3) Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (down 72 lawyers, for a total of 977)
4) Mayer Brown (down 66 lawyers, for a total of 1,457)
5) SNR Denton (down 45 lawyers, for a total of 1,093)
The firm that lost the most lawyers in percentage terms was Miller & Martin.
Corporate Counsel 2013 Survey Shows Value Tops Cost-Cutting as First Priority.
Patrick J. Lamb, in a June 12, 2013 post at Legal Rebels, informs us that a BTI Consulting survey of corporate counsel in 2013 showed value as the important important priority (32%) compared to controlling costs (21%), a shift from costs being identified as the king priority in 2006-2013 past surveys.
