$1.367 Million Expenditures Over Thirty Years On Public Areas, With $13.3 Million In Fees And $1.7 Million To Class Counsel.
On February 9, 2016, U.S. District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall of the Central District of California gave preliminary approval to a substantial American with Disabilities Act class action settlement by which the City of Los Angeles has committed to spend $1.367 billion over 30 years to provide public sidewalk and crosswalk system accessibility to persons with mobile disabilities. As part of the settlement, the City of Los Angeles separately agreed to pay Class Counsel $13.3 million in fees (representing a lodestar plus 1.3 multiplier) and $1.7 million in expenses, with the payment in addition to the $1.367 billion over-time payment. The settlement was brokered by two mediators, retired federal judges Tevrizian and Infante. The case is Willits v. City of Los Angeles, Case No. 2:cv10-05782-CBM (RZx).
